Backup power load testing with a load bank
You only know a backup generator works if you test it under load. A load bank lets you test it at full load, without touching the building's supply.
We have sold and delivered a 500 kW load bank to a Swedish installer of backup power.
The generator starts, but does it carry the load?
Many generators start without trouble at idle. Faults show up when the load arrives. That is when the fuel system, cooling and alternator show what they can do.
A load bank gives the generator real load in controlled steps. You find the fault during the test, not during the next outage.
How the test works
- Connect the load bank to the generator output.
- Raise the load step by step, in 1 kW steps, up to full power.
- Watch the generator during the test. The load bank's protections stop it on emergency stop or overheating.
- Move the load bank to the next generator.
Requirements and insurance
Standards such as ISO 8528 and NFPA 110 describe testing of backup generators. Insurers often require regular testing. Check what applies to your site.
Your own load bank
With your own load bank you test when it suits you, and several generators with the same unit. We help you choose the size and compare quotes.
Right size
The load bank should be able to take at least as much power as the generator delivers. Tell us which generators you have and we will suggest the right size.

What size load bank do I need?
Choose a load bank that handles at least the generator's output in kW. List the generators you will test in the quote form and we suggest a model.
Can I test several generators with the same load bank?
Yes. The load bank moves between generators. The 500 kW model sits on braked wheels and can be lifted by forklift.
Do I have to disconnect the building's supply?
The test runs against the load bank instead of the building. Plan the test with the person responsible for operations.
What does a load bank cost?
Price example: the standard configuration costs SEK 300,000 for 500 kW and SEK 500,000 for 1 MW, excluding VAT and freight. Installation is not included. For options and other sizes we send a quote.
