Load banks for data centres
A data centre has to prove that UPS, cooling and backup power handle full load before customers move in. A load bank supplies that load before any servers are installed.
We have sold and delivered a 500 kW load bank to a Swedish installer of backup power.
Commissioning without servers
During commissioning there are often no servers yet. The load bank stands in for them and gives the same heat and power. You load the site step by step and see how it behaves.
Test the UPS and batteries
Load the UPS with a known load and see how long the batteries last and how the system transfers. Read more under UPS and battery load testing.
Test cooling and airflow
A rack-mounted load bank sits in the rack and gives heat like a real server load. You see how air moves in the hall and whether cooling holds at full power.
Test the backup power
The diesel generators must take the whole load when the grid fails. Test them with a larger load bank. Read more under backup power load testing.
Right size
For the racks, the rack-mounted models fit. For UPS systems and generators, the large load banks fit. We help you choose.
Frequently asked questions
What is a load bank in a data centre?
A load bank is a resistive load that gives power and heat, like real servers. It is used to test UPS, cooling and backup power before the site goes live.
Can the load bank sit in a normal rack?
Yes. The rack-mounted models are 19 inch and range from 3 to 50 kW. Several units can be mounted in the same row.
Can I test both the racks and the backup power?
Yes. The rack models suit UPS and cooling, the larger load banks suit the generators.
What does a load bank cost?
Price example: the standard configuration costs SEK 300,000 for 500 kW and SEK 500,000 for 1 MW, excluding VAT and freight. Installation is not included. For options and other sizes we send a quote.
